Paphiopedilum appletonianum
Many orchidists believe this species is synonymous to P. hainanense however, there are some distinct differences. Flower stems are usually taller and the flowers are considerably brighter overall with more defined colors of lavender/pink in the petal tips and green in the pouch and dorsal. These easy to grow compact plants have boldly colored leaves with obscure green mottling. Paphiopedilum appletonianum plants can be quickly grown into specimens, carrying multiple flower stems in as little as a 3” pot!

This delightful miniature species is native to the island of Hainan off the coast of China. Flowers are apple green to chartreuse and are overlaid with darker green venation with lavender/pink on the petal tips. The green pouch is overlaid with greenish-brown giving a lovely finish to this eye-catching flower. These compact and easy to grow plants produce beautiful variegated green/silver leaves and can be established into multi-growth plants in a mere 2.5” pot!

Paphiopedilum leucochilum
Found on islands off Thailand, these low growing compact plants produce some stunning long lasting, extremely waxy flowers. The flower background is creamy white with an overlay of mahogany/red to near black in some cases. This overlay can be displayed in dashed patterns or in a near solid patch. The pouch is cream to pure white with no overlay. The plant leaves are heavily mottled dark green on the top and nearly solid purple underneath.

Paphiopedilum venustum album
The marbled ‘brain’ look in the pouch is always a conversation piece with this species, especially in this albinistic form. Plants are compact in growth and have beautiful lightly tessellated leaves with a crystalline overlay. These typically bloom in less than 24 months from the flask!

Paphiopedilum venustum
This is a truly exotic Paphiopedilum species a rare find in flask these days! This busy flower is like something put together from out of this world! The much defined green and white striped dorsal sepal is set off by the exotic colored petals of ruby, green and white. These perfectly horizontal petals are unsystematically overlaid with large dark spots of various sizes and bordered in fine delicate hairs. The pouch is no doubt the most interesting part of the flower containing the nerve like netting pattern of olive green over the glossy mahogany background. Plants are compact in growth and have beautiful dark tessellated leaves with crystalline like overlay.

CA509

It’s long down swept twisted petals are chocolate and yellow. The pouch is a light tan over a subtle yellow background. Mature plants in a 4” pot often flower 2 times a year and bear several blooms at a time.
